On Sunday 14th October we set off to London to the Excel Centre for Salon International. The event takes part in London every year with hairdressers coming from all over the world.

The show is set up with lots of different stages with professional products ,electrical tools and equipment, scissors etc. With the big names in the business such as ghd, label M, Patrick Cameron, The Sassoon academy.

Its great to go to see the latest innovations to hit the hairdressing world.
The girls got some new scissors so they came create some great new cuts.

On the way home we stopped off at the Westfield shopping centre in Stratford, the shopping centre is huge. We finished the day with some nice food from Wagamama’s. YUM YUM

Over the last 9 years ghd has raised £6 million pounds from the sales of their pink stylers for Breakthrough Breast Cancer. The stylers retail at £129.00 and for every pink styler sold in the UK £10 is donated to Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

Unfortunately the girls did not make it through to the final but they both did amazing and it was a big achievement.

We would all like to thank their gorgeous model’s Kim and Sophia, who looked fantastic and did a great job. Also a big Thank you to the Cupcake Make Up Artists Hannah and Samantha who did a brilliant job on the make-up and the girls were pleased to have them there keeping them calm.

The girls really enjoyed the day and the catwalk show was lots of fun in the evening where we all attended. We all cheered on Gemma and Lou coming down catwalk with their models and seeing their photos on the big screen.

Hannah and Samantha will also be taking part in the regional final with Gemma and Louise. They will travel up to London with them and their models on 29th May 2012, to do the Makeup for the final.

The girls are qualified and experienced, they both have been BTEC trained and regularly attend MAC makeup courses.

But this time not just one of us is through, no but TWO.
Gemma Smith and Lousie Burgess have made the regional final, it is such a BIG achievement for our Colchester salon, as hundreds to thousands of people enter around the region and as we are in the south we are also competing against the big London salons.

There has been lots of screams in the salon and everyone is excited.
Gemma says “I still can not believe it, i am in shock, but really looking forward to it” Lou says “ Its brilliant, so excited. Just looking for a model at the moment so if anyone knows any pretty ladies who are over 5ft 8inch, and are happy to cut their hair short and colour it dark with pink, please contact the salon,”.
Only 12 are chosen from the region, and three then go through to the final for the country.
So fingers crossed for the girls.

This year both Gemma and Lou chose BLAZE as their trend. Blaze is about high gloss hair with a Latin flair ,sharper and sculpted style. The trend is about a girl feeling like an entertainer, with a 30s feel. A girl that would steal the spotlight. (burlesque dancer).
The girls got through with their greats photos, so a big thank you to V.102 for their amazing photography and big thank you to their great models, who were up for anything.

The next step is for the girls to go to London on Tuesday 29th May where they will take their models and be judged. It’s a long day which starts early. In the morning they will cut and style the hair in front of the judges and have to talk about what they did and how.
Then in the evening there will be a catwalk show where we all attend and the finalists will be announced.

Anyway getting back to the title we met Alex Zane at the Front Row Wella Trend Vision show, at the Royal Horticultural Halls in London. We got there just in time after walking around in circles trying to find it.

Once there, we learnt about the four new trends for this year. Alex Zane was presenting but we managed to get a cheeky photo where Lou asked if she could hold his mic (trust Lou) lol.
He seemed friendly and was good at presenting the show.

The four trends for this year are BLAZE, the trend focuses on high gloss hair with a Latin flair ,sharper and sculpted styles, the trend is about a girl feeling like an entertainer, with a 30s feel. A girl that would steal the spotlight. (burlesque dancer).
CELESTE is a futuristic trend, it’s simplistic, sleek and pure perfection with not a hair out of place. Shine is important, colours are from the pastel palate.
ROXY this trend is big, bold, attention seeking style. Lots of texture and shape, very 70’s. Colours are cool red tones with a burst of violets coming though.
GRACE, this trend is more nature with a premium finish ready for the red carpet, this look is effortless, glamorous, and bouncy. Colours are soft, light and warm giving a healthy glow.

We really enjoyed the show this year and are feeling inspired, we can use these in our everyday work (in our Colchester salon) keeping us up to date with the trends for this year, but we are also really looking forward to the competition, where we chose a trend and a model and work our magic. Then we do a photo shot and send our photograph into Wella where we are judged for the next stage. Checkout some of our entries over the last four years in our photo gallery.

We both love the 60s, so we started out with some really cool canvases. We did a photo shot with some staff and models and one of the canvases was influenced by artist  Andy Warhol. The chairs were originally orange, and colour scheme was orange ,white and sliver. We had some really cool red sixty’s looking chairs at reception and some very retro cushions. We had a cool red phone too which was a pair of lips.

After 3 years of opening and a bit of wear and tear. We decided to have a refurb. We first thought about different eras and styles. And the 80s caught our eye. The rubiks cube was also an influence to start with, the 1980s 3D mechanical puzzle. We like the idea of black with colours, we decided the chairs must go black, but colours needed to be introduced. So the logo was then formed using 5 different colours yellow, blue, purple, pink and orange.

Then we had some news canvases done, one which had photos like polaroids of us over the years we have been open, and a big union jack using the colours of Fubar.
We also have hairdyers of all different colours, on the back wall we now have a tele, which we play our films of us doing photos shots and fashion shows. You can also check this out under videos.

We also painted the back wall with the influence of artist Peit Mondrian. We had great fun vamping up the salon, as we love to keep things fresh and new, and a nice clean comfortable place for our customers.
